The group found and removed dozens of oil containers, car parts, lorry tyres, a fridge and even a bottle shaped like a chicken from a footpath near Swanmore. Tyres thrown down a hill by fly-tippers were hauled up and a trailer base was cut up with a disc cutter and removed for disposal.

Software developer Martin Montague set up ClearWaste, a platform where people can report cases of fly-tipping around the UK. He developed the app to combat the illegal dumping and disastrous environmental issue that is costing taxpayers £750 million per year.

The event, which marked the start of the National Rural Crime Week of Action, provided an opportunity for both victims of rural crime and members of the rural community to find out more about the efforts the police and partner agencies are taking to tackle rural crime.

WASTE WARRIORS leading the fight against fly-tipping at a Hampshire beauty spot have been documented in a Channel 5 television programme. The popular television show, Grime and Punishment, followed the exploits of a team of volunteer clean-up workers as they removed rubbish from the Meon Valley countryside.

Martin Montague, the founder of fly-tipping reporting app ClearWaste.com, discovered the mountain of rubbish and described it as the worst he had ever seen.

A businessman was so fed up with fly-tipping that he decided to spent £300,000 funding a website and app in a bid to solve the nationwide issue.

A spokesman for Dorset Council said: "We welcome any efforts from members of the public to tackle fly-tipping. Together, we can crack down on this dangerous and anti-social activity."

After waiting in vain for local councils to step up to the challenge of waste crime, he created a free app called ClearWaste.com on which members of the public can report rubbish dumped illegally anywhere in the UK. This links automatically to every local authority in the council, allowing them to build a database of dumping hotspots, establish patterns and hopefully catch the criminals.
