Fly-tipping complaints fall in Shefffield during coronavirus lockdown

Complaints about fly-tipping in Sheffield have fallen during the coronavirus lockdown, bucking the national trend, new figures reveal. The Countryside Alliance reported that fly-tipping had risen by 76 per cent nationally, according to statistics from the reporting app ClearWaste. But Sheffield Council revealed there had been 791 incidents in the month to April 28 this year, compared with 1,053 during the same period in 2019 – a drop of nearly a quarter.

Despite the crisis, CEO and founder of ClearWaste Martin Montague, of Hampshire, remains determined to do all he can to prevent the illegal dumping of waste, after seeing the problem first hand when he moved to the countryside from London.

Illegal dumping of waste in the countryside has nearly doubled in Scotland since the coronavirus pandemic lockdown as most recycling centres have shut and more than half of the nation's 32 local authorities have cut waste collections. Clearwaste.com, the fly-tipping reporting website, has revealed that reports of indiscriminate fly-tipping across Scotland has risen by 83% as local authorities cut back on waste disposal.

The amount of fly-tipping across the UK has soared since the start of the coronavirus lockdown, according to an app created to combat the illegal dumping of rubbish. Martin Montague told SkyNews that his ClearWaste app is being bombarded daily with hundreds of photographs from across the UK, with the first week of the lockdown seeing a rise of 54 per cent nationwide.

Birmingham City Council closed the household recycling centres on March 24 along with other local authorities following an announcement from Prime Minister Boris Johnson. The council is continuing to provide waste and recycling collection services though it has suspended new subscriptions for garden waste collection.

A fly-tipping ground with heaps of sofas, bathtubs and fridges now has so much rubbish it can be seen from space. The site is piled high with household items with hundreds of car tyres, piles of clothes, suitcases and doors scattered across the disused road off the M4 in Newport, south Wales. The dumping ground is so littered pictures of the piles of waste are visible from satellite on Google Earth.

Hundreds of car tyres, piles of clothes, suitcases and doors are scattered across the disused road off the M4. The site is now so full of rubbish the piles of waste are visible from satellite on Google Earth. Resident Chris Taylor filmed the scale of the rubbish while out on his daily exercise with his family.He said: "It's been like this for some time. The frustrating thing about it is the scenery around it is amazing. The cycle path is lovely but then you turn in to this.

A Hampshire council spokeswoman said ‘Fly-tipping is a criminal activity and the county council continues to work closely with partners on a robust strategy to tackle this in Hampshire. ‘Regrettably, there are incidents of fly-tipping happening, but the data on fly-tipped waste tonnages for the initial three-week period following the government’s announcement on March 23, regarding non-essential travel, shows that fly tipping is no greater than the same period last year.

Rubble, wrecked furniture and hundreds of tyres were among items dumped by fly-tippers near Newport. Fly-tipping in Coedkernew has been a problem for some time but it has become worse in recent weeks, it is claimed. App ClearWaste said it had received an 88% increase in tipping reports in Wales since the coronavirus lockdown.
