Fly-Tipping Action Wales said there had been a rise in rubbish collection services advertised on social media and people should ensure they only use registered waste carriers - or face a possible fine.

Fly-tipping incidents have soared since the start of the coronavirus lockdown, according to an app created to combat the illegal dumping of rubbish. Businessman Martin Montague says his ClearWaste app is being updated daily with hundreds of photographs from across the UK. The app allows those who find fly-tip sites to take and upload photos, which his staff pass on to the relevant council.

Mr Montague created the app after being a victim of a fly-tipping scam, paying what he thought was a licensed operator to remove waste which he later discovered was simply dumped near his home in Hampshire. His app allows those who find sites where rubbish has been dumped to take and upload photographs which his staff pass on to the relevant council.

The ClearWaste app said it had received an 88% increase in tipping reports in Wales since the coronavirus lockdown. Newport councillor Allan Morris said the closure of council tips was a factor but blamed "unscrupulous" fly-tippers taking advantage of "fewer eyes". He believes the authority's waste sites would "ideally" be open, but could not criticise the council for wanting to protect staff.
